Espelette pepper is a protected Capsicum annuum variety from the French commune of Espelette and the surrounding Basque region. Prized for its sweet, fruity flavor and mild heat, it holds PDO status in Europe. The variety is also cultivated in California, though it lacks the AOC label of its French counterparts.
